Scottish-Inspired Bevel-Up Mitre Plane

Inspired by classic Scottish mitre planes, this versatile plane is engineered for comfort, control, and precision — whether used upright or on its side for shooting.

When shooting, the side-mounted horn allows you to drive the plane using the web of your thumb while your fingers register it firmly against the workpiece, leaving your other hand free to secure the stock. The shooting horn can be mounted on either side for right- or left-handed operation. For upright use, deep side finger grooves, a torrefied maple front knob, and a comfortable rear palm rest provide a secure and natural grip.

The body is made from fully stress-relieved ductile cast iron, with both sides machined flat and square to the sole for accurate shooting. At nearly 5 lb, the plane has substantial mass to deliver excellent inertia — ideal for mitres and shooting larger components such as moldings. The 10 1/2" long by 2 5/8" wide sole, with an extended toe one-third the plane’s length, ensures stable registration even when working at an angle, such as on a mitre jack.

An adjustable mouth allows fine tuning for optimal shaving control. Once set by loosening the front knob, a brass thumbscrew locks the setting securely and prevents the toe from contacting the blade.

The bevel-up configuration combines a 12° bed angle with a 25° blade bevel, producing a 37° cutting angle for exceptionally clean end-grain cuts. Features a 2" wide, 3/16" thick lapped blade PM-V11 tool steel. A Norris-style adjuster extends beneath the rear knob for convenient, unobstructed blade adjustment, while twin guide screws prevent lateral blade movement for consistent precision.

A substantial, precision-engineered plane designed for demanding shooting and mitre work.
